Character of Burgos
Burgos 1196- Burgos 1256
He was a noble, sailor and Spanish soldier, first Almirant of Castille and creator or the royal marine of Castille. In the year 1227 Ferdinand III, commisioned him to organize and direct a fleet of ships that was very important in the reconquest of Seville.
The fleet of ships was constructed in the Four Villages of the Coast (Leredo, Castro Urdiales, Santanter and San Vicente de la Barquera) depending on Burgos. He ended up contructing a fleet of 13 sailing ships and 5 galleys which have been funded by the Crown in Santarder during the year 1247.
Bonifaz arrived with his fighting ships in the estuary of the Guadalquivir river at the beginning of August of 1247.
He took the river with help from Castillian calvary. The decisive action of the battle was the breaking of the bridge-barrier that united Seville with Triana. He made a general assault on Seville and the king Axafat surrendered the city.
This battle showed the need for a naval force belonging to the Crown of Castille, thus king Ferdinand III comisioned Bonifaz to construct boat houses where ships could be built.
In the year 1250, king Ferdinand III named him Almirant of Castille to thank him for his work, care, knowledge and the success that he had.
Bonifaz, at the end of his life asked the King to be permitted to retire to his home in Burgos, where he founded the Monastry of Saint Francis.
